Shou Sugi Ban

The Japanese have a number of traditional building techniques that have a place in modern construction. My latest obsession is Shou Sugi Ban, which is a method of preserving timber that has a number of incredibly practical benefits. Burning wood makes it less susceptible to insects, rot/mold, and believe it or not, fire! In FNQ, these benefits are indispensable… imagine building your new home and not needing to worry about constantly having to repaint or treat your timber, or indeed termites and other similar sawdust making insects, or decreasing it’s vulnerability to bush fires.

So, not only is this technique ideal here, but I think it’s truly beautiful, whether it’s used for external cladding or feature walls. I hope a future client gives us the chance to embrace this ancient technique.
