A Gentleman's Retreat

Client Brief: Create a space that can be my private retreat, a kitchen to cook up a storm for the family and a bar to entertain guests

This project was pretty unusual as our client gave us full control over all the selections, the purpose of the space was clear but the ‘look’ was left to us. We decided on using an incredible 6m long slab of Queensland maple as the bar top and the rest of the design grew from there. Travertine tiles provide a natural, high end quality, to compliment the timber. The pressed metal bar front creates an interesting finish to the front, without detracting from the beauty of the timber. As our client is well traveled we created our own wainscotting, painted in ‘British racing green’ as a nod to the old English bar. The bathroom carried on the ‘natural quality’ and more Queensland maple softened the look of the vanity. Black gabions define the outdoor kitchen with granite tops selected to withstand the ‘outside’ elements as well as 304 stainless steel equipment to handle the waterfront location. The enormous stacker doors and bespoke gas strut windows really open up this otherwise private space, into an all inclusive area to accommodate their large family gatherings. And of course, a sauna in Cairns!’
